St. James History

The first Mass in Maine, Minnesota was celebrated in the home of John Barry, Sr. in 1878 or 1879 and then in the Patrick Moore's home which was more centrally located in the township.  Services began once a year, then once a month until the church was build in 1891 at a cost of $1000.00 on land donated by Daniel Moore and the cemetery grounds by Patrick Moore.  Most of the early settlers here were from Wisconsin and Canada, and most were of Irish descent. The Most Reverend Otto Zardetti blessed the church on November 3, 1893.

Patience, please, as the Saint James faith community develops its web pages.
